My collage-style textile art is inspired by Utah's native plants and the stories they tell about resilience and unexpected beauty. The Wavyleaf Thistle (Cirsium undulatum) is one of my favorite subjects because it reminds me that our greatest strengths are often hidden beneath our outward appearances. Frequently overlooked for its sharp spines, this remarkable native plant rewards a closer look with intricately layered leaves and luminous lavender blooms that nourish bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Like people, the thistle teaches that resilience is often forged through adversity.
Using scraps of fabric, layered textures, and free-form stitching, I created this botanical portrait that reflects the complexity and endurance found in nature. Discarded materials are given new life, echoing the thistle's ability to flourish in challenging landscapes. Through my work, I hope to encourage viewers to look beyond first impressions and discover the resilience, purpose, and quiet beauty found in the plants—and people—we often overlook.
